Strata Cut - Animation as Shape and Sculpture: The Secrets of Geometry and Form when Revealed as Kinetic Motion Over Time.
by David Daniels
David Daniels, the inventor of the non-conventional animation technique Strata Cut, will methodically explain how chunks of multi-colored modeling clay are strategically shaped, kneaded, carved and twisted into overlapping and intertwined strands composed as blocks. When these "time sculpture" blocks are sliced away with a knife, they reveal a precise pre-sculpted animated image sequence. The visual result is a kind of psychedelic-punk liquid neon impressionism. David will also talk about his concept of this animation technique as an "architectural flow".
In the large but competitive international animation market, exporting is a necessity that many times guarantees the survival of the studios. How can they structure themselves to face the demands of the market; how can they secure the continuity of the production in order to guarantee the full use of the structure's capability - these are the topics that will be debated by the participants in this panel.
Participants - Becky Bristow, Kevin Geiger (president & CEO of Magic Dumpling Entertainment), Wen Feng (VP of Creative Development of Magic Dumpling Entertainment), Reynaldo Marchezini (CEO of Flamma Films)
John Donkin and Bruce Anderson, producers of"RIO", will talk to Anima Forum participants about the conception and development of feature film projects.

"The Art and Design of RIO"
by Tom Cardone
Art Director Thomas Cardone will provide an in depth look at the planning, design and execution of the 3D animated feature "Rio". From concept to final frames, we will explore the process of creating a style and look for the film, communicating and executing that look with the crew at Blue Sky Studios and delivering the final film. We will discuss set, character, and lighting design and production, and how these elements come together to support and enhance the story.
Carlos Saldanha will present the professional audience with the details of each step of the production process of the feature film he directed, from the first idea to the international premieres. How is a huge international blockbuster produced? How is the project structured so that it can be created?

"Storyboarding and Animatics for Short Film Creation"
by Ryan Woodward
The process of storyboarding and animatics for feature films (Cowboys and Aliens, Spider-man, Ironman2, etc.) require a balance of good drawing, art, design, cinematography and storytelling. Take these skills out of the Hollywood pipeline and add in a little personal inspiration, a vision, sacrifice and passion, and a short film is soon to be born.
Presentation by the ABCA - Brazilian Animation Cinema Association. In addition to the presentation of its activities and achievements, the members of the ABCA will debate issues such as the structuring of the activity and the profession, the pay scale, positioning in the market, job bank, etc.

Presentation of the project that, for the last ten years, has been bringing the language of animation to schools. The Anima School has already trained over one thousand public school teachers from Rio de Janeiro to create and produce animation with their students, incorporating new possibilities to their educational practices. Throughout the project, the teachers create scripts, storyboards and animations in several different techniques. In addition, they learn how to use different tools, like the free software (MUAN) especially developed for the project. Through the language of animation, the teachers can work with the curricular content, as well as encourage the students to develop abilities and aptitudes that are a part of the art of animation: concentration, planning, abstraction and communication.
