The Open Studios is where audience and animators join together to experiment how to make animation by creating little films. Kids, teenagers, families and people from all generations collaborate with each other to discover the excitement of experimenting with various animation techniques. Here is where some of the future talented animators start developing their taste for this art to later compete with their own productions at the festival.
There is a separate Open Studio for each of these techniques: zoetrope, drawing direct on film, cartoon, claymation, pixilation, animation on sand and cut-outs. The workshops are free and the result of the works is immediately shown on a screen.
The films made by the participants are posted on the website www.animamundi.com.br and are kept available for viewing and downloading.
Zoetrope
It is a 19th century toy. Each participant creates a16-drawing sequence in a loop. When the drawings are inserted inside the zoetrope and the wheel is turned, the illusion of movement is created.
Drawing Direct on Film
Drawings are made with special pens on transparent 35mm film. The film is projected onto the "Moviola" a traditional equipment for viewing and editing film -and the animation is revealed.
Cartoon
It is the most popular animation technique. Drawings are made on top of each other over a light table, using perforated papers that fit registration peg bars, and then photographed in the desired order.
Claymation
Small groups of participants create scripts and characters that are modeled in clay and animated at a small background set.
Pixilation
A group of participants create a story where they are the actors. At a set, they create still positions that are recorded frame-by-frame. The result can be viewed as they animate themselves.
Sand
A layer of sand is laid over a light box. Delicate drawings made on the sand using fingers, brushes or other tools are photographed.
Cut-outs
The participants make paper cutouts from magnetized paper to assemble characters that are animated frame-by-frame to create movement.
